Earth's evil twin

Venus is the second planet from the Sun and the closest planet to Earth. It is one of the brightest objects in the sky and can sometimes even be seen during the day.

From Earth, Venus looks beautiful, but beneath its thick clouds is one of the most hostile places in the Solar System. Its crushing atmosphere, acid clouds and extreme heat make Venus hotter than Mercury, even though Mercury is closer to the Sun.

Venus key information

Brightest planet

Venus is the brightest planet in Earth’s sky and is often seen shining brilliantly after sunset or before sunrise.

Earth's evil twin

Venus is similar in size to Earth, but its surface conditions are extremely different and far more hostile.

Hottest planet

Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System because its thick atmosphere traps heat from the Sun.

Acid clouds

Venus is covered by thick clouds of sulphuric acid, which hide the planet’s surface from view.

A very long day

Venus takes longer to spin once on its axis than it takes to orbit the Sun, so a day on Venus is longer than its year.

Spins backwards

Venus rotates in the opposite direction to most planets, a type of rotation known as retrograde rotation.

Diagram showing Venus's orbit around the Sun

Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It orbits between Mercury and Earth and is the closest planet to Earth.

How big is Venus?

Venus is almost the same size as Earth, which is why it is sometimes called Earth’s twin. Its surface, however, is nothing like home.
